The Fjords (Vision of the Fjords) · Bjørvika, Oslo
An electric catamaran leaves Langkaia, opposite the Opera House, four times a day all year and loops out past Akershus Fortress and the inner islands to Bygdøy and back. Pick it if you want the shortest classic cruise, a pier five minutes from Oslo Central Station and commentary in your own language.

This is the cruise that does not start at City Hall. The Fjords, the company behind the electric boats on the Nærøyfjord in the west, runs a hybrid electric catamaran from Langkaia 1, the quay in front of the old Havnelageret warehouse opposite the Opera House. Oslo Central Station is about a five-minute walk away, which makes it the easiest boat to fit around a train or an airport express. The route on Norway's Best runs west past Akershus Fortress, City Hall, Aker Brygge and the Astrup Fearnley Museum on Tjuvholmen, out past Dyna Lighthouse and the islands Nakkholmen, Lindøya, Gressholmen, Heggholmen and Bleikøya, turns at Bygdøy and comes home along the Bjørvika skyline of MUNCH, the Deichman library and the Opera House.
Nobody talks on the microphone. Commentary comes through a free phone app that follows the boat by GPS, and the listing names seven languages: English, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Spanish and Chinese. Bring headphones and a charged phone, or you will see a lot and learn little. The boat has two lounges with floor-to-ceiling windows and a café selling coffee, pastries, sandwiches, beer and wine, and Visit Oslo says the ship is wheelchair accessible on deck as well as inside.
Two honest caveats. Ninety minutes keeps you in the inner fjord: no cliffs, no Drøbak narrows, just low wooded islands, summer cabins and the city from the water. And the operator warns that it can swap in a replacement vessel for weather or maintenance, which may not have the same step-free access, so call ahead if that matters. Departures are at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 16:00 every day of the year except 24 December.
Walk from Oslo Central Station towards the Opera House and cross to the quay in front of Havnelageret. Download the audio app on hotel Wi-Fi before you leave.
The boat swings west past Akershus Fortress, first mentioned in 1300, and City Hall, where the Nobel Peace Prize is handed out each December.
Past the waterfront flats and Renzo Piano's museum roof, then out to the little Dyna Lighthouse on its rock.
Nakkholmen, Lindøya with its painted cabins, Gressholmen, Heggholmen and Bleikøya slide by before the turn off the Bygdøy peninsula.
Back east for the new city: the Barcode towers, MUNCH, the Deichman library and the white marble Opera House, then the quay where you started.
