Fjord cruises from Oslo

Oslo is a port for big ships, a terminal for two overnight ferry lines and the start of a winter Hurtigruten voyage. Here is what each one is, and how to see the fjord on a port day.

Searching for fjord cruises from Oslo turns up three very different things: a two-hour sightseeing boat, an overnight ship to Denmark or Germany, and ocean cruises that call at Oslo for a day. They do not compete with each other. Knowing which is which saves a lot of confusion.

We list what sails, where it docks and what it is good for. We do not rank cruise lines. Figures come from Visit Oslo, the operators and Hurtigruten, checked in October 2026.

The quick answer

From Oslo you can take a 1.5 to 2-hour sightseeing cruise on the inner fjord, an overnight ship to Copenhagen (Go Nordic Cruiseline) or Kiel (Color Line), or Hurtigruten's North Cape Line, which starts in Oslo from September to April. The classic Hurtigruten coastal route starts in Bergen. Oslo had 174 cruise calls in 2025; on a port day, a short cruise from the Opera House fits easily.

What cruises are available from Oslo?

Sightseeing cruises on the inner fjord, overnight ships to Copenhagen and Kiel, a Hurtigruten voyage north, and ocean cruise ships calling for a day.

Here are the main options side by side.

Which cruise ships call at Oslo, and where do they dock?

Oslo had 174 cruise calls in 2025. Ships dock at four central piers, and two of them are about 400 m from the city centre.

Visit Oslo's 2025 annual report counts 174 calls and about 414,000 passengers, most of them from Germany, the US and the UK. Lines that list Oslo as a port include MSC Cruises, Holland America Line and Cunard, among many others; this is not a ranking.

What is the best fjord cruise on a port day in Oslo?

A 1.5-hour sightseeing cruise. The Opera House cruise sails every two hours from 10:00 and is a short walk from the eastern piers.

If your ship is in port for most of the day, a short cruise on the inner fjord fits easily, and it shows you Oslo from the angle your ship did not: the islands, Bygdøy and the Bjørvika skyline.

  • Short on time: the Opera House cruise takes 1.5 hours from Langkaia 1, with app commentary in seven languages.
  • Want a guide: the silent boat from City Hall Pier 2, two hours with a live guide.
  • Want everything: the city tour with a cruise takes 7.5 hours (Holmenkollen, Vigeland, the Fram Museum and more) and meets at 9:45. Check it fits your all-aboard time.

Allow a buffer. Book a departure that returns at least two hours before all-aboard, since there are no water taxis and boats can run late.

Can you take an overnight cruise from Oslo to Copenhagen?

Yes. Go Nordic Cruiseline sails daily at 16:30 and arrives at 10:00 the next morning. DFDS no longer runs the route.

DFDS sold the Oslo to Copenhagen route, and since 1 November 2024 it has been run by Go Nordic Cruiseline with the Nordic Crown and the Nordic Pearl. Ships leave each city at 16:30 and arrive at 10:00, about 17 hours. In Oslo they leave from Akershusstranda 31, below the fortress. Go Nordic says the Nordic Pearl will be in dock for two periods in 2027, when sailings drop to every other day.

Both ships sail out through the whole Oslofjord, past the Drøbak narrows and Oscarsborg, so you see much more of the fjord than on a sightseeing cruise, in the evening light. The full story is in the Oslo to Copenhagen post. Color Line details: Visit Oslo.

Does Hurtigruten sail from Oslo?

Its classic coastal route starts in Bergen. Hurtigruten also sells a North Cape Line voyage that starts and ends in Oslo, from September to April.

Hurtigruten's Original Coastal Express runs Bergen to Kirkenes and back in 12 days, calling at 34 ports. If that is the trip you want, start in Bergen: the Bergen Line from Oslo takes about 7 hours.

The North Cape Line is different: a 15-day round trip from Oslo to Honningsvåg and back on MS Trollfjord, with 13 ports including Ålesund, Tromsø, Alta and Svolvær. It sails between September and April. Hurtigruten also sells rail-and-sea combinations; check its site for current voyages.

Which cruise line is best for the Norwegian fjords?

We do not rank them. Check the port list instead: a fjord cruise worth the name calls at places like Geiranger, Flåm or Ålesund, not only Oslo and Bergen.

Oslo is often one stop on a Northern Europe or Baltic itinerary. The scenery between Oslo and the open sea is the long Oslofjord: pleasant, wide, with the Drøbak narrows as its highlight. The steep fjords of the UNESCO listing are on the west coast, with walls up to 1,400 m.

Three questions to ask of any itinerary: does it actually sail into a western fjord, or only call at a city? How long does it spend in the fjords, in daylight? And does it start or end somewhere you can reach easily? If the answer to the first is no, a few days on land with the Bergen Line and the Flåm Railway may show you more.

Oslo or Bergen: which is the better fjord base?

Bergen, for the western fjords. Oslo, for a capital city with its own calmer fjord. Bergen gets three times the rain.

Bergen is the gateway to the steep fjords: Hurtigruten starts there, Norway in a Nutshell runs from there, and fjord boats leave its harbour. Oslo has the bigger museums, the Opera House and the Oslofjord islands, and a drier climate: about 835 mm of precipitation a year against Bergen's 2,496 mm.

Which is nicer? It depends what you came for. Many visitors do both, joined by the Bergen Line, which is one of the best train rides in Europe. The private day trip to Flåm is the shortcut if you have to stay based in Oslo.

How many days is enough in Oslo?

Two full days for the main sights and the fjord; three if you add Bygdøy's museums and an island afternoon.

A plan that works for most first visits:

DayMorningAfternoon
1Akershus Fortress, the Opera House roofFjord cruise from Langkaia, then MUNCH
2Vigeland Park and HolmenkollenBygdøy by boat: Fram, Kon-Tiki, Folk Museum
3Island ferry to Hovedøya or GressholmenAker Brygge and Tjuvholmen by the water

Remember that the Viking Ship Museum is closed until 2027. If you have only one day, the city tour with a cruise packs a lot into 7.5 hours. The island ferry guide helps with day three.
