The best time for an Oslofjord cruise

Late May to early September is the easy answer. But the fjord works all year, and a winter trip under the heat lamps has its own charm.

The Oslofjord has a real winter: short days, frost and, in hard years, ice in the inner bays. It also has light, warm summers with evenings that barely end. The cruises run through both, but what sails, and what it feels like on deck, changes a lot.

Climate figures below are Oslo's 1991 to 2020 normals from MET Norway's Seklima service. Sailing seasons come from the operators, checked in October 2026.

The quick answer

June is our pick: long days, mild air and the full summer line-up, before the July crowds. May is the sunniest month on average. August is Oslo's wettest. In winter, the sailing ship, the Opera House cruise, the silent boat and the dinner cruise keep running, and a fish soup cruise sails on Saturdays. Pick a morning departure in summer, or the 14:00 in midwinter for the sunset.

What is the rainiest month in Norway?

It depends where. In Oslo it is August. In Bergen, on the west coast, it is December, and Bergen gets three times Oslo's rain.

Norway's weather splits along the mountains. Oslo, in the east, is relatively dry; the west coast catches the Atlantic weather.

Oslo (Blindern)Bergen (Florida)
Wettest monthAugust, about 103 mmDecember, about 290 mm
Driest monthMarch, about 41 mmMay, about 109 mm
Year totalAbout 835 mmAbout 2,496 mm

Normals for 1991 to 2020, MET Norway data. For an Oslo cruise, rain is rarely a dealbreaker: every boat has an indoor saloon with big windows. For a trip west to the fjords, May is the driest month in Bergen, which is one more reason to go in late spring. See fjords near Oslo for the trip itself.

How much daylight is there on the Oslofjord?

Almost 19 hours around midsummer, under 6 around the winter solstice.

Around 21 June, the sun rises at about 03:54 and sets at about 22:43. Around 21 December, it rises at about 09:18 and sets at about 15:12. That swing changes everything about timing a cruise.

  • Summer: every departure sails in daylight, and evening trips catch a slow golden light. The dinner cruise leaves at 18:00, hours before sunset.
  • Winter: a 14:00 departure on the Opera House cruise returns just after sunset. Later sailings are in the dark, with the city lit up, which is lovely in its own way.

Which cruises sail in winter?

The wooden sailing ship, the Opera House cruise, the silent boat and the dinner cruise all run all year. The fish soup cruise is winter only.

Summer-only options include the Mini Cruise, the evening shrimp cruise, the music cruises, kayak tours, the Langøyene boat and the Bygdøy ferry. What stays:

Does the Oslofjord freeze in winter?

Parts of the inner fjord can freeze in cold winters, but the main harbour stays open for the year-round boats.

In late January 2021, crowds walked on the ice at Sørenga, Kadettangen and Sandvika, people fell through, and police told everyone to stay off the inner fjord ice. Never walk on fjord ice in Oslo.

For cruises, the year-round ferries and sightseeing boats show that the central harbour stays navigable. The wooden sailing ship listing says that if the fjord freezes, the trip is cancelled with a full refund. All the cruises on this site have free cancellation up to 24 hours before, which helps if a cold snap is forecast.

What is the best time of day for a cruise?

Morning for calm water and fewer people; late afternoon or evening for the light. Avoid midday in July if you can.

The Opera House cruise sails at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 16:00. In summer, take the 10:00: the light is clean and the boats are quieter. In midwinter, take the 14:00 for the sunset. Skip the noon slot in July if you can; mornings are calmer.

For evenings, Båtservice's shrimp cruise leaves at 19:00 in summer and 18:00 in autumn, and the dinner cruise at 18:00 Thursday to Monday. On a June evening, both sail in full daylight.

What is the best month to visit the western fjords?

May to September. May is the driest month in Bergen; June to August have the longest days and the full timetable.

For Flåm and the Nærøyfjord, the trains and boats run all year, and Norway in a Nutshell is sold in winter too. But summer brings the longest days and the most connections, and the Geirangerfjord add-on runs only from June to September. July is the busiest month at Flåm. May and September are the sweet spots: green or golden, with fewer people.

What should you wear on the fjord?

A warm layer in every season, a rain jacket from August to December, and a hat and gloves from November to March.

  • Summer: it is cooler on the water than on the streets. Bring a jumper for the outside deck, and sunglasses for the glare.
  • Spring and autumn: wind and showers. A waterproof shell and a warm mid-layer.
  • Winter: January highs are around freezing. Thermal layers, a hat, gloves and good shoes. The boats provide blankets and heat lamps, but your feet will feel the deck.

Sea water in July averages around 17 °C, if you plan to swim from an island. The island ferry guide has the beaches.

Blankets, heat lamps and a heated deck: the wooden sailing ship is built for a cold day on the fjord.
