Booking choice: The guided silent boat. Check dates Tour details
Five boats take visitors round the inner Oslofjord from central Oslo, plus a dinner run, a winter fish soup trip, an island walk and a full-day bus tour that ends on the water. They pass the same fortress, the same islands and the same lighthouse. Picking the best one is about the details around the view.
We compared them on the points that change your day: commentary, pier, length, season, access and food. Everything comes from the listings and the operators' own pages, checked in October 2026.
The quick answer
The guided silent boat from City Hall Pier 2 is our pick for most English speakers: it has the only live guide. Choose the Opera House cruise for commentary in your own language and a pier near Oslo S, the wooden sailing ship for atmosphere and the free Bygdøy ferry, and the Bygdøy-stop cruise if you want to get off at the museums.

What is the best Oslo fjord cruise?
It depends on what you want from the two hours. For a live guide, the silent boat. For your own language, the Opera House cruise. For atmosphere, the wooden sailing ship.
Here is the short version for each kind of traveller. The rest of the guide explains the reasons.
| If you want... | Book | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A real person talking | Guided silent boat | The only city cruise with a live English guide |
| Commentary in your language | Opera House cruise | App audio in seven languages, near Oslo S |
| An old ship and blankets | Wooden sailing ship | Heated deck all year, Bygdøy ferry included |
| To hop off at the museums | Bygdøy-stop cruise | Optional drop-off at Bygdøy, schedule allowing |
| Dinner on the water | Dinner cruise | Three courses and live music, Thursday to Monday |
| To walk the islands | Island hopping walk | Public ferry and a guide on two islands |
| Everything in one day | City tour with a cruise | Holmenkollen, Vigeland, two museums, then the fjord |
All nine options on this site have free cancellation up to 24 hours before. The full list is on the tours page.
Which Oslo fjord cruise has a live guide?
Brim Explorer's silent boat. The others use recorded commentary: on a speaker, in an app, or both.
This is the biggest real difference between the boats, and listings blur it. A live guide answers questions, points at the sauna you are passing and adjusts to the weather. A recording does not.
| Cruise | Who talks | Languages |
|---|---|---|
| Silent boat | Live guide | English (and Norwegian, per Brim) |
| Opera House cruise | Voice of Norway app, bring headphones | English, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Spanish, Chinese |
| Wooden sailing ship | Speaker in English, plus an app | English; app in 13 languages |
| Bygdøy-stop cruise | Audio guide | Several, per the listing |
| Dinner cruise | Host and a musician | English and Norwegian |
| Winter fish soup cruise | English host and audio guide | English |
One guest on the sailing ship called the English commentary interesting and informative without being overwhelming. On the silent boat, the guide also goes quiet at times so you can enjoy the view. If your group does not share a language, the app on the Opera House cruise is the practical answer.

A guide on the microphone, MS Brisen running almost silent, and three outdoor decks for the photos.
Explore the guided silent boat Tour detailsWhich pier does each cruise leave from?
Three cruises leave from the City Hall piers (2, 3 and 4). The Opera House cruise leaves from Langkaia 1, a few minutes' walk from Oslo Central Station.
The City Hall piers, Rådhusbrygge in Norwegian, line the waterfront in front of the town hall. They are numbered, and they are not hard to mix up when you are in a hurry.
| Pier | Cruises | How to find it |
|---|---|---|
| Rådhusbrygge 2 | Silent boat, dinner cruise | Just before the Piren restaurant; arrive 15 minutes early |
| Rådhusbrygge 3 | Sailing ship, winter cruise, Bygdøy ferry | Under the Oslo Sightseeing sign above the kiosk |
| Rådhusbrygge 4 | Bygdøy-stop cruise, island walk, Ruter island boats | Platform E, by the Fisketorget building |
| Langkaia 1 | Opera House cruise | Opposite the Opera House, about 5 minutes from Oslo S |
Coming by train or staying near the station? The Opera House pier saves you a 15-minute walk across town. Staying near Aker Brygge or the Royal Palace? Go for a City Hall pier. The homepage has a guide to the meeting points.

How long is each cruise, and does the route differ?
From 1.5 to 2.5 hours. The routes share the islands and the turn at Bygdøy; the differences are in pace and stops.
The Opera House cruise goes out past the fortress, Aker Brygge and Tjuvholmen, threads the islands, turns at Bygdøy and returns past MUNCH and the Opera. Brim's route adds the Nesodden boathouses and the floating saunas. Brim's own site gives the trip as 2.5 hours, the listing as 2.
| Cruise | Length | Boat | Stops |
|---|---|---|---|
| Opera House cruise | 1.5 h | Electric catamaran | None |
| Sailing ship | 2 h | Wooden sailing vessel | Some departures allow a Bygdøy drop-off (operator) |
| Silent boat | 2 h (operator says 2.5) | Electric catamaran MS Brisen | Bygdøy drop-off on request (operator) |
| Bygdøy-stop cruise | 2 h | Electric boat | Optional Bygdøy stop, schedule allowing |
| Dinner cruise | 2.5 h | Electric boat | None |
| Fish soup cruise | 1.5 h | Wooden sailing ship | None |
A 1.5-hour trip is enough to see the whole inner fjord. Two hours feels less rushed, and the longer trips spend more time among the islands.
Ninety minutes from the Opera House, the shortest full loop, with commentary in your language.

The sailing ship, the Opera House cruise, the silent boat and the dinner cruise all sail all year. A fish soup cruise runs on winter Saturdays.
Summer adds the 50-minute Mini Cruise, the evening shrimp cruise and the jazz and blues cruises from Båtservice. In winter the line-up shrinks, but the boats that stay out are built for it.
- Sailing ship: heated main deck, heat lamps and blankets. If the fjord freezes, the trip is cancelled with a full refund.
- Opera House cruise: daily at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 16:00 per the operator, none on 24 December.
- Silent boat: two warm saloons with panoramic windows; one hot drink included from October to March, per the listing.
- Fish soup cruise: Saturdays at 16:00 in winter, 1.5 hours, soup and bread under the heat lamps.
Month-by-month detail is in the best time for a cruise, and this winter's sailings are in the winter 2026-27 post.

Which cruises are wheelchair accessible?
The Opera House cruise, the silent boat, the dinner cruise and the Bygdøy-stop cruise list wheelchair access. The wooden sailing ship does not state it.
Accessibility is where the boats differ most, so check before you book.
| Cruise | Wheelchair access | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Opera House cruise | Yes | Step-free deck per the listing |
| Silent boat | Yes | Brim asks guests with reduced mobility, vision or hearing to contact it in advance |
| Dinner cruise | Yes | Same operator as the silent boat |
| Bygdøy-stop cruise | Yes | Accessibility features listed |
| Wooden sailing ship | Not stated | Contact Båtservice before booking |
| Fish soup cruise | Yes, per the listing | Same operator as the sailing ship; confirm with them |
| Island walk | No | About 7 km on trails; not for under-9s |
| City tour with a cruise | No | Steps and uneven ground |
On the islands themselves, Langøyene has a wheelchair-accessible bathing area, while Gressholmen's paths are mostly nature trails.
Which Oslo cruises serve food?
The dinner cruise serves three courses; the winter cruise serves fish soup. The others sell snacks and drinks on board.
The dinner cruise is Brim Explorer's evening run: a seasonal three-course menu by the chefs of Restaurant Einer, with Norwegian seafood and a live musician. Pescatarian and vegetarian menus are available on request; tell them about dietary needs at least 24 hours ahead. Drinks other than tap water are extra. Visit Oslo lists it at 18:00, Thursday to Monday, all year.
In summer and autumn, Båtservice also runs a 3-hour evening cruise with a shrimp buffet on a sailing ship. On the daytime cruises, the silent boat has a café with pastries, and the Opera House cruise and the wooden ship sell snacks and drinks. Outside drinks are not allowed on the wooden ship.

Explore the dinner and live music cruise Tour detailsCan you get off at Bygdøy or the islands?
Yes, three ways: the Bygdøy-stop cruise, the free Bygdøy ferry on the sailing ship ticket, or the island walk on Ruter's ferry.
Most cruises are round trips. If you want to step ashore, choose with that in mind.
- Bygdøy-stop cruise: the electric cruise from Pier 4 lets you get off at Bygdøy, depending on the schedule, or stay on for the full loop.
- Sailing ship: the ticket includes the Bygdøy museum ferry the same day, from the same pier. The 2026 ferry season ran from 14 March to 4 October.
- Silent boat: Brim says guests can ask to be dropped at Bygdøy.
- Islands: the island hopping walk lands on two islands by public ferry, with a guide.
Planning a museum day? The Fram, Kon-Tiki, Folk and Maritime museums are on Bygdøy; the Viking ships are not on show until 2027. More in the Bygdøy by boat post.
Hop off at the museum peninsula or stay on board: two electric hours from City Hall Pier 4.
