Booking choice: The winter fish soup cruise. Check dates Tour details
A winter cruise on the Oslofjord is a quieter, darker version of the summer one. The boats are emptier, the islands are white or grey, and the light goes early. Most of the year-round cruises keep a daily timetable, while the shrimp buffets, music nights and the Bygdøy museum ferry stop until spring.
This post sets out what we could confirm on 20 October 2026, and where the operators have not yet published their winter plans.
The quick answer
Four sightseeing cruises run through the winter: the electric cruise from the Opera House, Brim Explorer's guided silent boat, Båtservice's wooden sailing ship and Trollcruise's electric boat, plus Brim's dinner cruise from Thursday to Monday. Båtservice adds a fish soup cruise on Saturdays at 16:00. Ruter's B1 island boat keeps running on a winter timetable from 19 October 2026. The Opera House cruise has no departures on 24 December, and a frozen fjord can cancel the sailing ship.
Which Oslofjord cruises run in winter 2026-27?
The Opera House cruise, the guided silent boat, the wooden sailing ship and the electric cruise from Pier 4 all keep sailing, plus a dinner cruise and a Saturday fish soup trip.
The clearest winter timetable comes from Norway's Best, which sells the electric cruise from Langkaia by the Opera House. It lists four daily departures, at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 16:00, for the whole period from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027. Brim Explorer runs its silent boat daily all year at 10:00 and 13:30 from Pier 2, with a hot drink included in winter.
Båtservice is the one to watch. Its winter sightseeing page still shows the 2025-26 season, which ran daily at 10:30 and 13:00 from 7 October to 10 April, and no dates for 2026-27 yet. The sailing ship on this site is sold as an all-year trip, so expect a similar pattern, but check the booking calendar for your date. Trollcruise's electric boat from Pier 4 is listed for every month of the year on Visit Oslo.
What stops for winter: the 50-minute mini cruise, the shrimp evening cruise, the jazz, blues and rock cruises, kayak tours, the Bygdøy museum ferry (its 2026 season ended on 4 October) and Ruter's summer lines to Langøyene, Son and Drøbak.

What changes on Ruter's island boats from 19 October 2026?
Line B1 moves to its winter timetable and keeps serving the inner islands. B2 to Langøyene has no winter timetable, so the beach island is off until summer.
Ruter lists two timetables for the island loop this autumn: one valid from 31 August to 18 October 2026 for B1 and B2 together, and a separate B1 winter timetable from 19 October 2026. There is no winter timetable for B2, and the extra summer shuttle B1X ended in August.
B1 still leaves Rådhusbrygge 4 for Hovedøya, Lindøya, Gressholmen, Bleikøya and Nakkholmen on an ordinary Ruter ticket. Check the winter PDF on ruter.no for times, because departures are thinner than in summer. Visit Norway has a blunt warning that matters more in the dark months: Oslo has no water taxis, so do not miss the last boat back.
Island cafés and kiosks may be closed out of season, so bring a flask. Our island ferry guide covers which island suits what.

Check dates for the island hopping walkHow cold is a winter fjord cruise, and how do the boats keep you warm?
Around freezing in midwinter, colder with wind on open water. The sailing ships use heat lamps and blankets; the electric boats have heated saloons with big windows.
Oslo's January average runs from a daytime high of about 0 °C to a low of about minus 5 °C, on the 1991-2020 normals. On open water the wind makes it feel a good deal colder than the thermometer says.
The boats deal with it in different ways. Båtservice's wooden ships have a heated main deck, infrared heat lamps on cold days and blankets, according to its winter page. Brim Explorer's MS Brisen has two warm saloons and three outdoor decks, and the Opera House catamaran has lounges with floor-to-ceiling windows. On those two you can watch from inside and step out for photos.
Dress as if for a winter walk, not a boat trip in town: a hat, gloves, a warm layer under a windproof jacket and shoes with grip for icy piers. Bring headphones for the app-guided boats, because cold fingers and phone speakers do not mix.

What is the Saturday fish soup cruise?
A 90-minute trip on a wooden sailing ship from City Hall Pier 3, on Saturdays at 16:00, with Norwegian fish soup and bread under the heat lamps.
Båtservice calls it Oslo Skyline in Winter. The ship sails past the Opera House, Akershus Fortress, Aker Brygge, Tjuvholmen and Bygdøy, with fish soup, bistro and bar on board. The listing on this site adds fresh bread, a warm blanket, heat lamps, an English host and an English audio guide.
Timing is the point. From late November the sun has set before 16:00, so this is a trip for the city lights, not for the islands in daylight. Expect the Opera House, MUNCH and the Barcode towers as a row of lit windows along the Bjørvika waterfront.
It runs once a week, so a single Saturday decides whether you get it. Book it early in your trip, and keep a weekday cruise as the backup.

Parts of the inner fjord can freeze in a hard winter. The sailing ship is cancelled with a full refund if that happens; the other operators reserve the right to change schedules for weather.
In late January 2021, crowds walked on ice at Sørenga and other spots on the inner fjord, and police told people to stay off it after several fell through. That was shore ice in sheltered bays. We found no official figure for how often the main shipping lane freezes, and the year-round ferries and cruises show the central harbour stays open in a normal winter.
The listing for the wooden sailing ship is clear: if the fjord is frozen, the tour is cancelled and refunded. Norway's Best says schedule and vessel changes may happen because of weather. All the cruises on this site have free cancellation up to 24 hours before, which is the best insurance you can buy in January.
Stay off fjord ice in Oslo, even when it looks solid from the shore.
How much daylight do you get, and which departure should you pick?
About six hours around the shortest day. In December take a late-morning or midday departure for daylight, or the 16:00 Saturday trip for the lights.
Around 21 December the sun is up from about 09:17 to 15:11 in Oslo (our times are calculated for the city centre with a flat horizon). That rules out the afternoon slots for daylight from late November to mid-January. On the Opera House cruise, the 12:00 is the one we would pick in December; the 14:00 comes back after sunset. On Brim's silent boat, take the 10:00.
Holiday dates: the Opera House cruise has no departures on 24 December. Båtservice names Christmas and New Year cruises on its winter page without dates so far. Check every operator for 24, 25 and 31 December before you plan around a boat.
